A few months ago, I started seeing a Frenchman. Little did I know that to a Frenchman “seeing” each other does not equate to “dating”. You see, Frenchmen do not date.
When I quizzed him about this, he said the word “date” didn’t exist in the French language. And then said, Why do we need to put a label on it?
When I also asked him what I should call him – boyfriend, friend with benefits, lover – he thought about it for a few seconds then answered, Aren’t we just fine the way we are?
I like labels, I like to know where I stand. Which makes me think, how on earth can an anglo deal with this? I mean, you can try and put these label questions aside for a while, but eventually they’ll just rear their ugly heads again. And then what?
