Je t’aime – those magical words…
But he said them after 9 dates, just a handful of weeks. Did he mean it? Is he head over heels in love with you? Is he moving too fast? Is he telling you you’re The One? What does it all mean????!!
Frenchmen and their I love you’s. They come, they go, sometimes they stay.
For many people, I love you is something you wait before saying. You wait to really feel it, to feel that pull, that tug of affection, that feeling of wanting someone in your life, of cherishing them, of seeing a future together. When you say the words, they have meaning. They carry weight.
A Frenchman, however, says Je t’aime without the same back story. He feels good with you, he likes you, he’s enjoying being with you. That’s what it means for him. No one can possibly love someone after 9 dates because you’re still getting to know each other! And yet, those words Je t’aime. It feels weird to you, but it’s natural to him.
So what does Je t’aime mean to a Frenchman? I guess: I really like you.
Now do you say it back? that’s the question. You may feel weird saying those special words so early. But it’s also not great when you don’t hear back: Moi aussi, je t’aime… Tough call because you don’t want to hurt his feelings, but at the same time you don’t want to say something so meaningful, but then to him it doesn’t really mean much!
My Frenchman said Je t’aime very early on. If I recall, it was the first time we had sex on date #8. I think I said Moi aussi je t’aime but in the French way if you will – I was in the moment so hell with it, I just went with the flow. And hey, once I said it a few times, it just started tripping off my tongue. Je t’aime. No big deal. Yeah, I like you too honey.
Fast forward 8 months, now when I say it, it’s different of course. I just wonder how those words have come on in his head…
